Memorial Tribute for Herbert Pickard
The family of legendary musical prodigy, songwriter, pianist, organist, director, arranger, and native Detroiter Herbert L. “Pee Wee” Pickard, along with The Mighty Voices of Thunder male chorus of Greater New Mt. Moriah Baptist Church, is planning a Memorial Tribute during the choir’s annual Moments of Meditation at 6 PM on Sunday, March 20, 2016.

Spotlight Artist Jon Plair
February’s Spotlight Artist, Jon Plair, has recently followed up his successful debut single, I Gotta Do Better, with the beautiful worship song, More Than Yesterday. Both songs are from Jon’s album entitled Can You Imagine, recorded at Studio A in Dearborn. Kellen Brooks, Chiffon McNeal, and Pastor Rudolph Stanfield Jr. were also involved with this impressive and inspiring project.

DetroitGospel.com’s roving reporters, Carl B. Phillips and Renee‘ traveled to Las Vegas last weekend for the 31st Annual Stellar Gospel Music Awards.

Of
all of Detroit’s Stellar Award nominees, it was a Detroit youth choir
that wound up bringing Detroit’s only Stellar Award home this year. God’s Gift and Soldiers, under the direction of
James Render, was awarded the Stellar Award for Youth Project of The Year.
The youth choir is comprised of students from Davison Elementary/Middle
School where Mr. Render is one of the Teachers of Excellence.

T.J. Hemphill’s Perilous Times returns

Another former Detroit Public School educator, T.J. Hempill, discovered his love for theater when volunteering with Detroit youth. T.J. Hemphill’s gospel stage play, Perilous Times returns March 24-26, to the Detroit Opera House and includes Clifton Powell, Isaac Carree, Tim Bowman Jr., Terrell Carter, Teisha Brown, Lavell Neal, Eric Deon, Corey McClure, and more.
