There’s been a lot of controversy surrounding Oxygen Network’s new reality show, “Preachers of L.A.” Well, we decided to flip the script and we asked folks to send us some of the positive things that the “Preachers of Detroit” are doing right here in the city.

Special thanks to everyone who sent in info, including Dr. Bobby Jones, whose pastor, Darryl Drumwright of Temple Church, Nashville, Tennessee is doing great things. Below are the submissions for the five pastors selected for this month’s “Preachers of Detroit.”

Rev. Dr. Lawrence C. Glass, Jr. is the Senior Pastor of El Bethel Church
(located at 25295 Grand River Ave @ 7 Mile, Redford, MI 48240, 313.532.7897, www.elbethel.net) and also the First Vice Chair of the Council of Baptist Pastors. He is truly a man fired up with God’s presence, leading God’s people, for God’s purpose! We celebrate 23 years under the leadership of Pastor Glass, whom we affectionately call “PG”. The El Bethel family continues to believe and witness that Pastor Glass has the courage of Joshua, the strength of David, the faith of Paul, the prayer life of Daniel, the wisdom of Solomon and he fears the Lord like Job. He is a man of God, unmoved by Satan, yet determined through the direction of the Holy Spirit to carry out the vision of the ministry given to him by our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Each and every day, Pastor Glass pours selflessly into the members of our congregation and God’s kingdom. We honor him this month and every month for all that he does for God’s Kingdom.

Yesterday Rev. Dr. Lawrence C. Glass, Jr.  El Bethel Church gave direction and leadership to “Joshua Walk II” a walk designed for spiritual awareness to the campaign of electing our next Mayor.  It was a Powerful Move of God as he led members and colleagues across the City of Detroit in a walk around the Coleman A. Young Municipal Center 7 times in silence then regathered in front of the Spirit of Detroit for Song, Prayer and Shouts of Victory!

To quote Pastor Glass:
– We march, so that the walls of injustice come down and the right to a democratic process returns to its state.

– We march for women who want to save their children, that discrimination come down, that crime turns around.

– We march for safe streets, whole family and a vibrant City.

Bishop P. A. Brooks and the New St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God in Christ (located at 15340 Southfield Freeway, Detroit, Michigan, 48223, (313) 835-5329, www.nspt.org) have been “helping people help themselves through the multi-purpose ministry of the church” for over 60 years.  A few of the things that we have accomplished are:

FAITH MANOR: A gated 57 Unit Senior Citizens Complex that was constructed to provide a first class and viable living residence for seniors. Special amenities include, a library, exercise room, on-site laundry facilities, community room, balconies, light water fountain, manicured lawns, circular drive, etc.

In addition to being a stable housing complex, FAITH MANOR enhances the neighborhood that it is a part of, being as a beautifully constructed building not only a practical offering.

Grief Share and Divorce Care support groups are offered for persons going through special times in their lives.

Special Mentorship classes for young boys and young men have been and continue to be offered.  The GOD’S MALE CHOICE Mentorship Classes are offered at no cost and provide academic tutoring, personal and social development instruction, Motivational Speaker’s Forum with Business and Community Leader’s presenting in-depth and insightful training and knowledge for future careers and employment. Several years ago, Judge Gershwin Drain and other Recorders Court Judges participated in a special “Rites of Passage” Service for the young boys (similar to the Jewish Bar Mitzvah). Bishop Brooks prayed for and placed Kente Cloths on each of the young boys during the service.

This has been a very successful and positive program to prepare our youth of today for their present and future and stem the tide of  self-destruction and violence.

Space will not permit us to list the multitude of other programs and ministries that are offered.

We thank God for using Bishop P. A. Brooks and the members of New St. Paul Tabernacle Church of God in Christ to help this generation to be the best that it can be for His Glory and Honor.

Rev. Dr. Jim Holley is the pastor of Historic Little Rock Baptist Church (located at 9000 Woodward Avenue, Detroit, MI 48202, 313.872.2900, www.historiclittlerockbc.org). Rev. Holley will soon be celebrating his 70th Birthday and 45 years in the ministry. Many know him as the pastor who started the Shoes For Children program. Rev. Holley is currently working to bring services to the North End. He proposed to bring health services such as the IPH, Day care, feeding the less fortunate, basketball to the neighborhood, and providing health care prevention and education. He just recently organized a grassroots committee that planned and successfully held a tribute to honor Congressman John Conyers, Jr. for his 50 years of service in civil rights, government, and military service. Through Rev. Holley’s efforts an endowment scholarship program named after Congressman John Conyers, Jr. was created.

Rev. Byron C. Moore, pastor of Ebenezer A.M.E. Church – Detroit (located at 5151 Chicago,  Detroit, MI 48204, (313) 933-6943, www.thebigeonline.com) is a welcomed change and breath of fresh air in this day and age of prosperity preaching, mega church building, self-divining spirituality. Pastor Moore is just simply down to earth, but always packs a divine Word from the Lord! He is a humble person who is not ashamed to express and demonstrate his love and thankfulness for his family. He could have been the VP of Human Resources by now at a Fortune 500 company, but he is a man that is true to his faith and decided to go where the Lord led him; into pastoral ministry. Pastor Moore understands that someone’s introduction to Christ may be predicated on what they see in you. So, he is always mindful of loving like Christ, forgiving like Christ, teaching like Christ, and showing us how to be like Christ. Finally, the young brother can P.R.E.A.C.H! Not that surface, cliche, dragon breathing, microphone shaking stuff… I mean the true WORD and he NEVER uses any notes!
