PBS’ Great Cultural Historian, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Is Coming to Detroit to Host an In-person Event Introducing His New Series, ‘GOSPEL’

Best-selling author, revered Harvard professor and popular filmmaker, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. is coming to Detroit, on Friday, Feb. 2, to present a special screening of his new docuseries, “GOSPEL.” After the preview, he will participate in a fireside chat about our city’s glorious history as a gospel capital. Then, to prove the point, the Stellar Award-nominated local choir, Larry Callahan and Selected of God, will perform.
The full film, from Gates, Shayla Harris and Stacey L. Holman, will air on Detroit Public TV Monday and Tuesday, Feb. 12-13, at 9 p.m. The documentary delves into the origin of Black gospel music, tracing its roots from slavery, blending with the blues tradition, and reaching new heights during the Great Migration. It also highlights the profound influence that Detroit has had on the sounds of gospel music.
The in-person event will be held at Fellowship Chapel, 7707 West Outer Drive in Detroit, from 6:30-8 p.m. on Feb. 2. As a supporter of Detroit Public TV, you are invited to attend this one-of-a-kind event, which provides an opportunity to hear from Dr. Gates, an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker, literary scholar and the Alphonse Fletcher University Professor and Director of the Hutchins Center for African & African American Research at Harvard University.
