In 2008, nine-time Grammy Award winner Wynton Marsalis was commissioned to create an unparalleled piece of music commemorating the bicentennial of Harlem’s legendary Abyssinian Baptist Church. The end result? A sacred celebration! Marsalis’ Abyssinian Mass is a soul-stirring composition written for big band and a 70-voice gospel choir. The Carr Center and Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church are proud to present this sweeping masterpiece to Detroit audiences for the first time. Join legendary gospel soloist Karen Clark Sheard, Maestro Damien Sneed and jazz dynamo Rodney Whitaker alongside the Gathering Orchestra and Carr Center Community Choir for this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience a performance that is part theater, part devotion and complete celebration!
