Detroit Lions Players to feed 10,000 of Detroit’s Hungry and Homeless Community
on Saturday, October 3rd

DETROIT (September 25, 2015)  Embracing
the “One Detroit. One Pride.” motto, members of the Detroit Lions will
join together on Saturday, October 3rd to participate in the nation’s
largest feed the homeless event, taking place right here in the Motor
City. Now in its 4th year, The Shu Foundation’s
Annual Detroit Red Carpet Backyard BBQ is
back and bigger than ever. Last year over 5,000 individuals were fed.
This year’s goal is to feed 10,000. Taking place at the newly renovated
Detroit’s West Riverfront Park, this one day extravaganza aims to honor
and uplift those who struggle daily with poverty. This special day will
provide participants with free hot cooked meals, grocery giveaways,
health screenings, live entertainment, access to human service agencies
and yes, a walk down the red carpet.

“Detroit
is now the “come-back” city”, said Robert Shumake, Chair of The Shu
Foundation and Event Founder. “Through this event, we aim to give the
same type of hope and opportunity for growth to the poor and needy
residents of Detroit that the world now sees when they look at the
development of our downtown community”.

In
true red carpet fashion, this event will feature a host of celebrity
appearances and live performances including American Idol finalist and
Detroit’s own Malaya Watson, Americas Got Talent finalist Selected of
God and the renowned Universoul Circus performers, amongst others.
Lion’s tight ends Brandon Pettigrew, Tim Wright, Eric Ebron and Casey
Pierce will spend the day serving food, taking pictures and signing
autographs for the homeless community.

From
great food to live music and dancing, this event is one the entire
family can enjoy. Reginald Humphrey, Manager of Supplier Diversity for
General Motors, stated “Not only is this one of the nation’s largest
feed the homeless events, but it’s also aiming to give a hand up while
giving a hand out by providing much needed access to human service
resources to participants. GM is proud to serve as a gold sponsor this
year to support this worthy cause”. Other distinguished guests scheduled
to attend include, Sheriff
Benny Napoleon and Detroit City Council President Brenda Jones.
Year-after-year affluent community leaders, citizens and avid supporters
of Detroit, continue to be eager to partake in such a rewarding cause.

The event is free and open to the public from 11 AM – 5 PM. If you are interested in serving as a volunteer, please complete the volunteer signup sheet.
