Shumake Family and Friends Foundation Aims to feed 10,000 of Detroit’s Homeless Community this Holiday Season

With over 20,000 homeless citizens in the city of Detroit, Shumake Family and Friends Foundation will kick off the 2014 holiday season with their 3rd Annual Detroit Red Carpet Backyard BBQ for the Homeless and Hungry on November 22nd. Taking place at the historic Masonic Temple, 500 Temple St, Detroit, MI 48201,
this one day event will once again provide meals for up to 10,000
low-income and homeless citizens in the Detroit and Metro-Detroit
communities.

As
an official National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week event, The
Detroit Red Carpet Backyard BBQ aims to put an end to Homelessness and
Hunger by providing fresh, healthy, hot-cooked meals prepared by
Celebrity Chef, Jeff Toney, distribute blankets from Radio One’s “Warm
Detroit” Blanket Drive, provide live entertainment, music,
homelessness/food pantry resources, human service agency vendors, and
health and wellness testing/screenings.
“With
the negative publicity surrounding the City of Detroit as a “bankrupt
City”, through this event, we have seen the exact opposite represented
for Detroit. There is unlimited wealth and prosperity that exists in
the hearts and spirits of Detroiter’s who roll up their sleeves and give
back to their neighbors who need the most help. That is what the
Detroit Red Carpet Backyard BBQ is all about. It embodies the spirit of
Detroit,” said Robert Shumake, Chair of the Shumake Family Friends
Foundation and Event Founder.
Hosted
by world-renowned Comedian Horace H.B. Sanders, this event is one the
entire family can enjoy. Joining Horace, the event will also feature
appearances and live performances by other VIPs including Grammy Stellar
Award Winner Dorinda Clark Cole, Mark J of Karew Records, Southside
Recording artist and star producer Ant Taylor and Rap Artist Icewear
Vezzo. The dynamic DPS All City High School Marching Band will also
perform. Other distinguished guests scheduled to attend include,
Trinidad & Tobago Ambassador, Dr. Neil Parsan, Botswana Ambassador,
Dr. Tebelelo Sereste, Senator Burt Johnson, and Councilwoman Brenda
Jones. Year-after-year community leaders, key influencers, citizens and
avid supporters of Detroit, continue to be eager to partake in such a
rewarding cause.
“We
are excited to give back to the people of this great city and
appreciate what the organizers of the Detroit Backyard BBQ are doing to
make our city’s homeless population feel special and cared for,” said
Reginald Humphries, a Senior Manager within General Motors Supplier
Diversity division. “GM is proud to serve as a Silver Sponsor for this
awesome event.”
Without
such sponsors and supporters the Detroit Backyard BBQ would not be
possible. The event is free and open to the public from 11 AM – 5 PM.
Come out and enjoy this phenomenal community endeavor while joining the
fight to end Hunger and Homelessness in the city of Detroit.

event is being presented by Shumake Family and Friends Foundation, in
