Verizon Wireless’s “How Sweet The Sound 2013” hit the historic Fox Theatre in Detroit on Sunday, October 6, 2013. Former Regional Winners and the Chrysler 300 Super Bowl commercial choir, Larry Callahan & Selected of God, opened the evening and got the praise party started right. Choirs competing for the evening were:
- DaNell Daymon & The Greater Works Chorale
- Jamar Esaw and Triad 4 Christ
- Albert Strickland & Cho’Zen Community Gospel Choir
- Anthony McGahee & Praise Motivated
- The Apostolic Church Sanctuary Choir (2012 Regional Winner)
- Carlos Whitlow & Generation Praise (2013 Regional Winner)
Choir attire ran the fashion spectrum from traditional robes to poodle skirts. Praise performances brought the sold out audience to their feet time and time again with original praise dance moves and creative touches such as washboards as instruments.
Veteran hosts Yolanda Adams and Donald Lawrence both performed (“Best4Last”) and kept the celebration of gospel running smoothly. Judges Tamela Mann, Vashawn Mitchell, Hezekiah Walker, and Marvin Sapp also graced the stage with performances and abundant personality, and had the super tough job of selecting Detroit’s regional winner. One word was repeated over and over by the judges throughout the night, “AMAZING!”
